The extensor indicis is a narrow, relatively small, elongated muscle of the forearm that lies in the deep part of the posterior compartment. It courses between the distal aspect of the ulna and the index finger. The main function of this muscle is the extension of the index or second finger at the metacarpophalangeal and both interphalangeal joints.
