The jugular foramen is a large, irregularly shaped opening between the petrous part of the temporal bone anteriorly and the lateral part of the occipital bone posteriorly. When viewing the jugular foramen from the extracranial aspect, it is found posterior to the external opening of the carotid canal and lateral to the foramen magnum.
