The foramen ovale is an oval-shaped opening that is situated posterolateral to the foramen rotundum. Like the foramen rotundum, it is also found in the middle cranial fossa. The foramen ovale is positioned in the greater wing of the sphenoid posterolateral to the sphenoidal lingula and lateral to the foramen lacerum.
