The foramen lacerum is an irregular, somewhat triangular-shaped opening that is found in the middle cranial fossa between the petrous part of the temporal bone, the basilar part of the occipital bone, and the body and greater wing of the sphenoid. After birth, the foramen lacerum is covered by cartilage.
