The obturator nerve is a mixed nerve of the lumbar plexus. It arises from the ventral rami of the second to fourth lumbar nerves (L2 - L4) and innervates the adductor muscles of the thighgracilis, and obturator externus. It also provides sensory innervation to a small area of the medial thigh and gives articular branches to the hip joint and knee joint. This nerve may also receive contributions from the first or fifth lumbar nerves (L1 or L5).
