The superior cluneal nerves (also called the superior gluteal cutaneous nerves) are purely sensory nerves that arise from the dorsal rami of the first to third lumbar nerves (L1 - L3). However, there may be significant variations, with neural contributions ranging from T11 to L5 spinal nerve levels. These nerves do not contribute to the lumbar plexus, and they provide cutaneous innervation to the skin of the lower back and upper gluteal region.
