Sural nerve

The sural nerve (Latin: nervus suralis) is a sensory nerve in the leg that arises from the union of the medial sural cutaneous nerve (from the tibial nerve) and the lateral sural cutaneous nerve (from the common fibular nerve) at the middle of the lower leg.

The sural nerve descends from the mid calf to the lateral side of the ankle, passes to the lateral surface of the calcaneus and then continues as the lateral dorsal cutaneous nerve.

Along its course sural nerve gives off lateral calcaneal branches to the lateral surface of the calcaneus.

The sural nerve innervates the skin of the dorsal and lateral sides of the lower leg, lateral surface of the calcaneus and lateral side of the foot.
