The rectus capitis posterior minor muscle is a pyramidal-shaped, most medially located suboccipital muscle. It connects the first cervical vertebra (atlas; C1) with the occipital bone of the skull and acts at the atlanto-occipital joint to provide the head extension. It is smaller than the rectus capitis posterior major muscle and is located medial to it.
