The longus capitis muscle is a long, flat muscle that is positioned anterior to the cervical part of the spine. It is classified as the prevertebral muscle of the neck and is the most superficial muscle of the group. The longus capitis connects the lower four cervical vertebrae (except for the seventh cervical vertebra) to the occipital bone of the skull.
