The obliquus capitis superior muscle is a small, most laterally located suboccipital muscle. It lies superficial to the recti muscles of the suboccipital region and below the splenius capitis muscle. The obliquus capitis superior connects the first cervical vertebra (atlas; C1) with the occipital bone of the skull. Also, this muscle forms the superolateral border of the suboccipital triangle.
