The intermediate or middle phalanges are similarly shaped, but they are shorter and smaller than the proximal phalanges. However, they appear very similar to the proximal phalanges. The first toe lacks the intermediate phalanx. Therefore, there are only four intermediate phalanges in each foot instead of five.
