The main features of the cecum (or caecum) are listed below:

Lies in the right lower quadrant in the right iliac fossa on the iliacus muscle (part of the main hip flexor - the iliopsoas muscle), inferior to the ileocecal junction.
Ileocecal junction/valve/sphincter and ileal orifice - a circular sphincter muscle at the end of the ileum forms a valve/sphincter and prevents reflux of colon contents into the ileum.
The cecum has no mesentery.
Blood supply is provided by the ileocolic artery from the superior mesenteric artery.
Veins that collect blood from the cecum drain into the superior mesenteric vein.

The appendix is a freely mobile, worm-like (hence “vermiform appendix”) blind diverticulum with a small lumen containing masses of lymphoid tissue. It varies in length and position. Some of its features include:

Origin - posteromedial side of the cecum, inferior to the ileocecal junction; position may vary, retrocecal position (where the appendix is posterior to the cecum) is the most common one.
Taeniae coli converge on the root of the appendix at the base of the cecum.
Blood supply is provided by the appendicular artery, which is a branch of the ileocolic artery.

Clinical note: the symptoms and signs of appendicitis (inflammation of the appendix) vary according to the organ’s location. One pattern for pain from appendicitis shows two stages – an early stage of poorly localized pain surrounding the umbilicus followed by sharper, well-localized pain in the right lower quadrant. The appendix is usually in the iliac fossa in contact with the iliacus muscle, part of the major hip flexor, and so patients may have pain on hip extension (the psoas sign).
