Venous drainage of small intestine (jejunum and ileum)

The venous drainage of the jejunum and ileum occurs through numerous small jejunal and ileal veins that further carry blood to the superior mesenteric vein. The superior mesenteric vein unites with the splenic vein behind the head of the pancreas, forming the hepatic portal vein. Therefore, the venous drainage of the jejunum and ileum is provided by the portal venous system.
