Large intestine

The large intestine is the final part of the gastrointestinal tract. It lies within the abdominal and pelvic cavities and can extend up to 5.7 feet (1.75 meters) in adults. It begins at the ileocecal junction as the cecum and is a continuation of the small intestine. Therefore, the large intestine is positioned between the ileum and the anus. Some parts of the large intestine are located retroperitoneally, while some are positioned intraperitoneally.
