As mentioned in the previous slide, the visceral surface (facies visceralis) is irregular, and it connects with adjacent internal organs. Sites where they connect are slightly depressed and are known as impressions.

Gastric impression (facies gastrica) - found anteromedially between the superior border of the spleen (margo superior splenis) and the hilum (hilum splenis); it represents the site at which the spleen connects with the fundus of the stomach (fundus gastris); it is the most concave impression.
Colic impression (facies colica) - found at the inferior aspect of the visceral surface; it corresponds to the site where the spleen connects with the left colic (splenic) flexure (flexura sinistra (splenica) coli).
Pancreatic impression (facies pancreatica) - found medially between the hilum and the colic impression; it is located right below the inferior aspect of the splenic hilum; it marks the site at which the tail of the pancreas (cauda pancreatis) touches the spleen (if the spleen does not come in contact with the tail of the pancreas, this impression is not present).
Renal impression (facies renalis) - found posteromedially between the inferior border (margo inferior splenis) and hilum; it corresponds to the site where the left kidney (ren sinister) connects with the spleen.

Note: Some authors use words like areas or surfaces instead of impressions. While this is not incorrect, sites where the spleen connects with other organs are slightly depressed. Therefore, the term impressions is more appropriate. Also, International Anatomical Terminology uses the term impressions.
