According to the International Anatomical Terminology, the spleen has two distinct borders (superior and inferior). However, some authors lately state that there is one more - intermediate border. In this slide, we review all three of them.

Superior border (margo superior) - it is the sharpest border; it has one or two notches close to the anterior extremity (extremitas anterior splenis); this border separates the diaphragmatic surface from the gastric impression of the visceral surface (facies visceralis splenis).
Inferior border (margo inferior) - it is relatively round; this border separates the renal impression of the visceral surface from the diaphragmatic surface.
Intermediate border (margo intermedius) - this border is found on the visceral surface of the spleen; it appears thick and incomplete and extends from the posterior extremity (extremitas posterior splenis) to the hilum of the spleen; it separates the gastric impression from the renal impression.
