The spleen has the following two extremities:

The anterior extremity (extremitas anterior) is the lower pole, and it is also sometimes called the lateral or inferior extremity. It is directed downward and forward.
In contrast, the posterior extremity (extremitas posterior) is the upper pole, also known as the medial or superior extremity. It is directed upward, backward and medially.

Overall, the anterior extremity is broader and more expanded than the posterior, which is more pointed.
