The pterygopalatine fossa is a small, paired cone-shaped (somewhat inverted pyramidal-shaped) space found on each lateral side of the skull inferior to the apex of the orbit. It is found deep to the infratemporal fossa, extending between it, the nasal cavity and the orbit. This fossa is also known as the sphenopalatine or sphenomaxillary fossa.
