The lateral compartment of the leg consists of two muscles:

Peroneus longus

The peroneus longus muscle - also known as fibularis longus - is a superficial muscle located in the lateral region of the lower leg.

Origin: head and upper two-thirds of the lateral surface of the fibula, intermuscular septa.

Insertion: the muscle passes downward behind the lateral malleolus and inserts into the medial cuneiform bone and the base of the first metatarsal bone.

Action: plantarflexion of the foot, eversion of the foot, support for the transverse arch of the foot.

Innervation: superficial peroneal (fibular) nerve (L5 - S2).

Blood supply: peroneal (fibular) artery, branches of the anterior tibial artery.

Peroneus brevis

The peroneus brevis muscle - also known as fibularis brevis - is a short muscle located in the lateral region of the lower leg just below the peroneus longus.

Origin: distal two-thirds of the lateral surface of the tibia.

Insertion: fibers of the peroneus brevis pass vertically downward behind the lateral malleolus and insert into the tuberosity of the fifth metatarsal bone.

Action: plantarflexion of the foot, eversion of the foot, support for the lateral longitudinal arch of the foot.

Innervation: superficial peroneal (fibular) nerve (L5 - S2).

Blood supply: peroneal (fibular) artery.
