The dorsal muscles of the foot include the following:

The extensor digitorum brevis muscle is a muscle of the upper surface (dorsum) of the foot.

Origin: superior surface and lateral surface of the calcaneus, talocalcaneal ligament, inferior extensor retinaculum.

Insertion: fibers of this muscle pass forward and insert into the tendon of the extensor digitorum longus muscle of the 2nd to 5th toes.

Action: extension of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th toes.

Innervation: deep peroneal (fibular) nerve (L5 - S1).

Blood supply: branches of the dorsalis pedis artery.

The extensor hallucis brevis muscle is a muscle found on the upper aspect of the foot that aids in extending the big toe.

Origin: lateral surface and superior surface of the calcaneus, inferior extensor retinaculum.

Insertion: base of the proximal phalanx of the hallux (big toe).

Action: extension of the hallux at the 1st metatarsophalangeal joint.

Innervation: deep peroneal (fibular) nerve (L5 - S1).

Blood supply: branches of the dorsalis pedis artery.
