The suprascapular vein is another tributary of the external jugular vein. It arises within the infraspinous fossa of the scapula and accompanies the same named artery - the suprascapular artery.

After the suprascapular vein arises, it ascends along the wall of the infraspinous fossa, wraps around the neck of the scapula, passes through the spinoglenoid notch and reaches the supraspinous fossa. Further, the vein ascends towards the suprascapular notch.

When the suprascapular vein reaches the notch, it either goes through it with the suprascapular nerve or passes over the transverse scapular ligament that stretches above the suprascapular notch.

Then the vein continues to flow towards the root of the neck and ends by flowing into the external jugular vein.

Overall, the suprascapular vein drains the same region as the corresponding artery supplies. It collects venous blood from the muscles found at the posterior aspect of the scapula, including the supraspinatus muscle and infraspinatus muscle.
