The cruciate ligament of the atlas is a component of the atlanto-axial joint. It is also sometimes referred to as the cruciform ligament of the atlas. The ligament has been given such a name because of its resemblance to a cross.

The transverse band of the ligament is formed by the transverse ligament of the atlas, while the vertical portion is formed by additional fibers (longitudinal bands) above and below the transverse band.

The transverse ligament of the atlas extends between the lateral masses of the atlas, anchoring the dens of the axis (C2) in its place against the posterior part of the anterior arch of the atlas.
The superior longitudinal band extends from the transverse ligament to the anterior border of the foramen magnum and clivus of the occipital bone.
The inferior longitudinal band goes from the transverse ligament to the posterior surface of the body of the axis.

The transverse band of the cruciate ligament is one of the primary stabilizers of the atlanto-axial joint, along with the alar ligaments.
