On the anterior lobule of the insula three short insular gyri can be seen going parallel to each other:

Short anterior insular gyrus - the most anterior one; limited anteriorly by the anterior peri-insular sulcus;
Short middle insular gyrus - in the middle between the short anterior and short posterior insular gyri;
Short posterior insular gyrus - the most posterior insular gyrus; limited posteriorly by the central sulcus.

Between the short anterior and short middle insular gyri is located the anterior insular sulcus, while the short middle and short posterior insular gyri are separated by the precentral insular sulcus. Both sulci go parallel to the central sulcus.

Sometimes the anterior lobule presents with the accessory gyrus located anterior to the short anterior insular gyrus.

All mentioned gyri merge at a site below them which is called the insular apex.

Below the insular apex, the anterior lobule presents with one more gyrus - transverse insular gyrus.
