The cerebellum is divided into lobes and lobules. The lobes are the primary way of division, while the lobules represent subdivisions.

The anterior lobe is the anterior part of the cerebellum ending at the primary fissure. The anterior two-thirds of the vermis is also a part of this lobe. The anterior lobe is responsible for controlling muscle tone and posture, as well as muscle activity during stereotyped movements.
The posterior lobe is located between the primary fissure and posterolateral fissure. This lobe is associated with such functions as planning movements, coordination, and rapid, fine and non-stereotyped movements.
The flocculonodular lobe - the smallest lobe of the cerebellum - is located between the posterolateral fissure and superior medullary velum. This lobe takes part in coordination of eye and head movements.

The surface of the cerebellum has small elevations (folia) and grooves (sulci and fissures).

The cerebellum has three pairs of peduncles connecting it to the brainstem:

Superior cerebellar peduncles - connect the cerebellum to the midbrain; these peduncles contain afferent fibers and efferent fibers;
Middle cerebellar peduncles - largest peduncles, they attach to the pons and carry only afferent fibers called the pontocerebellar fibers;
Inferior cerebellar peduncles - connect to the medulla oblongata; they contain the so-called restiform bodies and juxtarestiform bodies carrying efferent and afferent fibers.
