The intertransverse ligaments are fibrous bands that extend between the transverse processes of adjacent vertebrae. They stretch from the superior aspect of the transverse process below to the inferior aspect of the transverse process above. These ligaments are found along most of the spine.

The cervical intertransverse ligaments are more like irregular, scattered fibers, and they are mostly replaced by the intertransversarii muscles. Due to this structure, we did not depict and review these ligaments in the model.
The thoracic intertransverse ligaments resemble fibrous cords that usually blend with the adjacent muscles.
The lumbar intertransverse ligaments are thin and membranous.

Unlike other ligaments, the intertransverse ligaments do not have distinct medial and lateral borders and often blend with adjacent muscles. Some authors argue that the intertransverse ligaments should not be classified as true ligaments but rather as membranous extensions of muscle fibers.

The main function of the intertransverse ligaments is to limit lateral flexion of the spine.
