Anterior atlantoaxial membrane

The anterior atlantoaxial membrane is a thin fibrous tissue sheet that connects the anterior surface of the body of the axis (C2) to the anterior arch of the atlas (C1). Laterally, it blends with the atlantoaxial joint capsules. This membrane spans the atlantoaxial joint and contributes to its stability.

Like the anterior atlantooccipital membrane, the anterior atlantoaxial membrane helps limit excessive movement, particularly by preventing excessive extension between the atlas (C1) and the axis (C2). This membrane also plays a role in reinforcing the atlantoaxial joint and maintaining the integrity of the cervical spine while allowing for rotational movements at the median atlantoaxial joint.
