Carotid triangle
The carotid triangle is a triangular-shaped area found at the anterior upper portion of the neck. It is bounded by the following structures:
- Anterior - posterior margin of the superior belly of the omohyoid;
- Posterior - anterior border of the upper aspect of the sternocleidomastoid muscle.
- Superior - posterior belly of the digastric muscle and the stylohyoid muscle.
The floor of the carotid triangle is formed by the thyrohyoid muscle, hyoglossus muscle and middle pharyngeal constrictor and inferior pharyngeal constrictor. This triangle is covered by the skin, platysma and deep cervical fascia.
