Each tooth has three main parts:

Crown - the visible part of the tooth presenting with white or yellowish-white color; it is elevated above the gingiva (gums); the surface of the crown is responsible for the mechanical processing of food;
Neck - slightly narrowed part located between the crown and the root, therefore it connects both parts; it is covered by the gums and has a connection with the marginal gingiva;
Root - lies in the dental alveoli of the mandibular and maxillary alveolar arches.

The root of each tooth is fixated by a fibrous joint type called gomphosis - a continuous bone connection that binds teeth to the dental alveoli.

Each tooth is also fixated within the alveolus with the help of the periodontium, which is a specialized fibrous tissue located between the roots of the teeth and bone tissue.
