Children have 20 primary teeth. They start to erupt (appear) during childhood, usually around six to eight months.

Around the age of 5 to 7 years begins the replacement of primary teeth, which usually continues till 12 to 14 years.

The dentures of the permanent teeth lie down between the roots of the primary teeth until the replacement time. The last permanent teeth to erupt are the third molars.

Eruption times of primary teeth

The first primary teeth appearing are the medial incisors, and it happens around 6 - 8 (overall, 6 - 12) months. Not so long after, the lateral incisors erupt. Overall, these teeth appear between 6 (7) to 16 months.
The first molar tooth of the primary dentition can be visible around 12 to 15 (overall, 12 - 19) months.
The canine teeth emerge around 16 to 20 (overall, 16 - 23) months.
But the second molar tooth can be visible only at 20 to 24 (overall, 20 - 33) months.

Replacement times of primary teeth

The first permanent teeth appearing are usually the first molar teeth that erupt around 6 - 7 years.
Medial incisors of the primary dentition are being replaced by permanent medial incisors around age 8 and lateral incisors around age 9.
Replacement of the first molar tooth of the primary dentition (premolar tooth in adults) happens around ten years.
Canine gets replaced around 11 to 13 years, while the second molar tooth appears only around 13 to 16 years.
The third molar teeth (also called the wisdom teeth) can emerge anytime between 17 to 30 years or even later. Usually, it happens till age 24.
