The characteristic J-shape of the stomach is created by two curved borders known as curvatures:

Greater curvature - long and convex border; it is found more on the left side; it extends from the cardiac notch to the pylorus;
- Cardiac notch - an indentation formed between the abdominal esophagus and the fundus of the stomach;
Lesser curvature - short and concave border; located more on the right side of the stomach;
- Angular notch - small incisure at the distal end of the lesser curvature that marks the intersection site between the body and the pyloric part of the stomach.

The stomach has two surfaces or walls found between both curvatures. Anterior between the lesser and greater curvatures is the anterior surface, while posterior is the posterior surface.
