The epididymis is a small, elongated, heavily coiled structure that is attached to the superior pole and posterior border of the testicle (Read more!). Like the testicle, it is also located in the scrotum, and it belongs to the internal genital organs of the male reproductive system.

The epididymis connects the testicle to the ductus deferens (Read more!), and thus to the urethra (Read more!). It is the site where sperm matures, gets its motility, and is stored until it is discharged to the ductus deferens. Along with the testicle, the epididymis is also covered with tunica albuginea and the covering layers mentioned in the previous slide. Between the body of the epididymis and the testicle is a small recess that is known as the sinus of epididymis.

The epididymis is highly convoluted and tightly compressed, and it is almost solid because of its tight compression. The epididymis actually arises from a single duct and consists of one tubule called the duct of epididymis. All spermatozoa pass through this single duct, and this coiled duct of epididymis is collectively called the epididymis.

Like the testicle, the epididymis is also a paired structure. When compressed, the epididymis is only around 2.36 to 2.76 inches (6 to 7 centimeters) in length. Surprisingly, when uncoiled, it measures about 20 to 23 feet (6.10 to 7.01 meters) in length.

Note: Sometimes, above the head of the epididymis and in front of the ductus deferens is a small projection that consists of convoluted tubules. It is known as the paradidymis, and it represents the remnant of a part of the Wolffian body.
