The liver maintains its position through various ligamentous attachments that connect it to the diaphragm, anterior abdominal wall, and adjacent organs. Overall, the liver is fixated by the following ligaments:

Falciform ligament - a thin, sickle-shaped double-layered extension of the parietal peritoneum; it attaches the liver to the anterior abdominal wall and the abdominal (inferior) surface of the diaphragm; this ligament stretches craniocaudal on the diaphragmatic surface of the liver, separating the left lobe from the right lobe; the upper portion of the falciform ligament diverges to merge with the right and left aspects of the coronary ligament; the inferior border of the ligament is free and does not have any attachments; however, it contains the paraumbilical veins and the round ligament of the liver;
Round ligament of the liver (ligamentum teres hepatis) - an obliterated remnant of the left umbilical vein that functions during the fetal period; extends from the visceral surface of the liver to the inferior aspect of the falciform ligament; lies in the fissure between the quadrate lobe and the left lobe of the liver; also found within the free inferior border of the falciform ligament;
Coronary ligament - a peritoneal reflection that encloses the bare area of the liver; this ligament has an outline similar to the crown, hence its name; it extends from the abdominal (inferior surface) of the diaphragm to the superior and posterior aspects of the liver; the coronary ligament consists of two layers - anterior layer and posterior layer; between both layers is a large triangular-shaped area (so-called “bare area”) where the peritoneum does not cover the liver; also, both layers of the coronary ligament form the right and left triangular ligaments on each side; the anterior layer of the ligament runs superiorly on the diaphragmatic surface and connects it with the inferior surface of the diaphragm; the posterior layer of the ligament connects the visceral surface of the liver to the posterior abdominal wall, right adrenal (suprarenal) gland and right kidney;
- Right triangular ligament - continuation of the coronary ligament; formed by both layers of the coronary ligament; it is short and forms the borderline of the bare area;
- Left triangular ligament - continuation of the coronary ligament; formed by both layers of the coronary ligament; some authors state that the left lobe does not have a true coronary ligament, but instead, the falciform ligament merges with the left triangular ligament; this ligament extends along the superior aspect of the left lobe;
Hepatoduodenal ligament - peritoneal ligament and a part of the lesser omentum; connects the liver with the proximal portion (superior part) of the duodenum;
Hepatogastric ligament - peritoneal ligament and a part of the lesser omentum; attaches the liver to the lesser curvature of the stomach; it is larger than the hepatoduodenal ligament;
Ligamentum venosum - an obliterated remnant of the ductus venosus that functions during fetal circulation (the ductus venosus is a shunt that allows blood to bypass the liver as it connects the umbilical vein directly with the inferior vena cava); it lies in the fissure between the left lobe and the caudate lobe of the liver.

Note: The lesser omentum is a double layer of the peritoneum that stretches between the visceral aspect of the liver, the stomach, and the duodenum. It consists of the hepatogastric ligament and hepatoduodenal ligament. The lesser omentum has a free margin between the porta hepatis and duodenum, which encloses the structures of the porta hepatis.
