The permanent mandibular incisors are the four front teeth located in the middle of the lower jaw. The mandibular incisors usually appear between 6 and 7 years.

As mentioned before, the main functions of the incisors, including the mandibular incisors, are cutting, plucking, and biting the food during chewing, as well as they help to hold the food in the oral cavity. Like other teeth, the mandibular incisors also take part in the articulation process and speech formation. Besides all the mentioned functions, the mandibular incisors give a visual and personal appearance, they help to shape the face and support face tissue.

Depending on their location relative to the midline of the jaw, the mandibular incisors are divided into two subdivisions - medial or central and lateral incisors.

The mandibular and maxillary incisors are easy to distinguish because the mandibular incisors lack the lingual pit, as well as they have a characteristic shape of the root.

The mandibular central incisors have the following numbers according to each dental notation system:

24 and 25 (Universal Tooth Numbering System)
31 and 41 (ISO-3950 system)
⎾1 and 1⏋(Palmer system)

The numbers of the mandibular lateral incisors are as follows:

23 and 26 (Universal Tooth Numbering System)
32 and 42 (ISO-3950 system)
