The venous drainage of the large intestine is mainly provided by the hepatic portal system via the superior and inferior mesenteric veins. The hepatic portal vein is formed by the confluence of two vessels - the splenic vein and the superior mesenteric vein. The inferior mesenteric vein usually joins the splenic vein.
