The broad ligament of the uterus is actually a duplication of the peritoneum. It stretches in the frontal plane between the uterus and the lateral wall of the lesser pelvis. The broad ligament serves as the place of attachment for the Fallopian tubes and one border of each ovary.

The broad ligament has four margins:

Superior margin - free border that surrounds the Fallopian tube from all sides;
Inferior margin - fused with tissue of the perineum;
Medial margin - attached to the uterus;
Lateral margin - connected with the lateral wall of the pelvis.

The broad ligament can also be divided into three parts named as following:

Mesosalpinx - the superior part; its upper border is formed by the free margin of the broad ligament with the Fallopian tube contained within it; inferiorly, the mesosalpinx is bounded by the ligament of the ovary (ligamentum ovarii proprium) and the basis of the mesovarium; and laterally, it is bounded by the fimbriae of the Fallopian tube;
Mesovarium - the portion of the broad ligament that extends from its posterior aspect and attaches to the ovary;
Mesometrium - the largest portion of the broad ligament; it is located below the ligament of the ovary, the basis of the mesovarium, the fimbriae of the Fallopian tube, and the suspensory ligament of the ovary (ligamentum suspensorium ovarii).
