The hypoglossal nerve (CN XII) is a motor nerve that supplies general somatic efferent fibers to all skeletal intrinsic muscles of the tongue, three of the four extrinsic tongue muscles (except for the palatoglossus muscle), and geniohyoid muscle, providing tongue movements, speech, and such function as swallowing.
