The anterior division of the internal iliac artery gives rise to more branches than the posterior division. These branches mostly supply the visceral structures of the pelvis. However, they also provide arterial blood to the parietal structures of the pelvis, gluteal area, and thigh.

Overall, the anterior division gives rise to these arteries (in the most common order of their origin):

Umbilical artery (Read more!) - leaves the true pelvis and ascends to the umbilicus; in fetus, this is a large artery that carries blood from the fetus to the placenta; in adults, it has two portions - a patent part and an occluded part; the patent part gives rise to the superior vesical arteries and the artery of ductus deferens; the occluded part is presented by a fibrous remnant of the umbilical artery - the medial umbilical ligament that continues to the deep surface of the lower anterior abdominal wall; this artery supplies the urinary bladder, ureter, and ductus deferens;
Obturator artery (Read more!) - extends along the lateral wall of the pelvis and passes towards the obturator foramen; it exits the true pelvis via the obturator canal; supplies the urinary bladder, pubic bone, hip joint, and adductors of the thigh; it can also arise from the external iliac artery or inferior epigastric artery (in approximately 19% of individuals);
Inferior vesical artery (Read more!) - supplies the urinary bladder, ureter, ductus deferens, seminal gland, and prostate; as a distinct artery, it is only present in males; in females, this artery is a branch of the vaginal artery; this artery may also share a common trunk with the middle rectal artery;
Middle anorectal (rectal) artery (Read more!) - provides arterial blood supply to the rectum;
Internal pudendal artery (Read more!) - exits the true pelvis via the greater sciatic foramen below the piriformis muscle, curves around the ischial spine and enters the perineum via the lesser sciatic foramen; it goes through the pudendal canal (Alcock's canal); supplies the rectum, perineum, external and internal genital organs;
Inferior gluteal artery (Read more!) - it is the terminal branch of the anterior trunk, supplying the gluteal region and the thigh; it goes medially between the anterior rami of S1 and S2 (or S2 and S3) and leaves the true pelvis via the greater sciatic foramen below the piriformis.
