The inferior vesical artery is a branch of the anterior division of the internal iliac artery (Read more!). It has a relatively short course. After this artery arises, it passes towards the urinary bladder in the subperitoneal space. The inferior vesical artery emerges on the posterior aspect of the urinary bladder, where it ramifies. It mostly supplies the fundus and neck of the urinary bladder.

This artery, as a separate trunk, is present only in males. In females, several inferior vesical branches arise from the vaginal artery. Sometimes, this artery shares a common trunk with the middle rectal artery. In addition, the artery of ductus deferens may arise from the inferior vesical artery instead of the superior vesical artery. The inferior vesical artery forms several anastomoses with the superior vesical artery.

The inferior vesical artery gives small prostatic branches that supply the prostate and seminal gland. It also provides branches to the ureter and urethra. The urethral branches transverse the junction between the prostate and urinary bladder and supply the proximal portion of the urethra. Occasionally, this artery also supplies the ductus deferens.
