Ophthalmic nerve (CN V1)

The ophthalmic nerve (CN V1) is the first branch of the trigeminal nerve (CN V). The ophthalmic nerve is a sensory nerve mostly carrying general somatic afferent fibers that transmit sensory information to the central nervous system from the structures of the upper face - eyeball, conjunctiva, lacrimal gland, skin of the upper face and anterior scalp, lining of the upper part of the nasal cavity, ethmoid air cells and frontal sinus, as well as the dura mater of the anterior cranial fossa. Some of the ophthalmic nerve branches also convey parasympathetic fibers.
