The posterior tibial vein is a paired deep vein of the lower leg formed by the lateral plantar vein and medial plantar vein.

This vein arises on the plantar surface of the foot, ascends to the flexor retinaculum, and then passes through the cruropopliteal canal. At the distal border of the popliteus muscle both posterior tibial veins unite with the anterior tibial veins to form the popliteal vein.

Along its course, the pair of posterior tibial veins is accompanied by the posterior tibial artery.

The main tributaries of the posterior tibial vein are the fibular veins and superficial veins, as well as various venae comitantes.

The posterior tibial vein collects venous blood from the posterior compartment of the leg and from the plantar surface of the foot.
