Sutures of the viscerocranium connect the bones that form the facial skeleton. Therefore, these sutures are mostly seen on the anterior part of the skull.

The sutures of the viscerocranium include the following:

Internasal suture - a short suture that separates both nasal bones and runs in the midline of the anterior face; closure of this suture starts in the 20s and ends in the 30s;
Nasomaxillary suture - a paired suture that is found on each side of the nose; it is formed by the lateral border of the nasal bone and the frontal process of the maxilla;
Lacrimomaxillary suture - another paired suture; it is found on the anteromedial wall of each bony orbit; this suture is created by the articulation between the anterior border of the lacrimal bone and the frontal process of the maxilla;
Zygomaticomaxillary suture - situated more laterally than the previously mentioned sutures; it is a paired suture that is formed between the maxillary process of the zygomatic bone and the zygomatic process of the maxilla; it is the longest and thickest maxillary suture and is also known as the infraorbital suture;
Lacrimoconchal suture - this suture is situated deeper than the previous sutures; it can be seen on the lateral wall of the nasal cavity; it connects the descending process of the lacrimal bone with the lacrimal process of the inferior nasal concha;
Median palatine suture - a sagittally oriented suture that runs in the midline of the hard palate and connects both palatine processes of the maxillae and both horizontal plates of the palatine bones; it serves as the growth site of the maxilla; this suture is formed by the intermaxillary and interpalatine sutures:
- Intermaxillary suture - a single suture that runs in the sagittal plane; it is found right below the nose and continues on the hard palate; it is formed by the fusion of both maxillae; it is mainly closed by age 18;
- Interpalatine suture - a single, sagittally directed suture that separates both horizontal plates of the palatine bones;
Transverse palatine suture - a horizontally oriented suture that separates both palatine processes of the maxillae from both horizontal plates of the palatine bones; it is composed of two palatomaxillary sutures:
- Palatomaxillary suture - a paired horizontally directed suture that separates the palatine process of the maxilla from the horizontal plate of the palatine bone;
Incisive suture - this suture is not always present; if present, it is found in the anterior aspect of the palatine process and alveolar process of the maxillae; most commonly, it resembles the letter “V” in shape; it separates the part of the palatine and alveolar processes containing all palatine processes from the rest of these processes; the portion of the maxilla anterior to the incisive suture is referred to as the premaxilla.
