Start FREE trial now The bones of the skull, except the mandible, are separated from each other by sutures - rigid fibrous joints with a fracture-like appearance. All cranial sutures strongly unite the adjacent bones, protecting the underlying brain and forming the skeleton of the head. The zigzag-like appearance of the sutures increases the contact surface between adjacent bones, thus providing more strength to the joints.
