Besides the nuclei, the gray matter of the spinal cord can also be divided into ten zones called the Rexed's laminae (RL) that contain previously described nuclei. The Rexed's laminae are organized into layers according to the function and structure of the nuclei. The distribution of these layers in the gray matter looks like a lamination pattern.

The Rexed's laminae are described with Roman numerals I to X, and each lamina corresponds to one or several spinal nuclei. Laminae I to VI are located within the dorsal horns. RL VII and RL X are situated in the intermediate zone of the gray matter, while RL VIII and RL IX are found in the ventral horns.

RL I corresponds to the marginal nucleus.
RL II is associated with the substantia gelatinosa.
RL III - IV are analogous to the nucleus proprius.
RL V and RL VI are the origin of various propriospinal neurons and sometimes are inseparable.
RL VII corresponds to the dorsal nucleus of Clarke, intermediolateral and intermediomedial nuclei.
RL VIII marks the location of the medial motor nuclei.
RL IX holds the lateral motor, accessory and phrenic nuclei.
And finally, RL X is located around the central canal, and it mainly contains neuroglia.
