The false pelvis is the expanded space above the pelvic inlet (and the linea terminalis). It is bounded by both wings of the ilium and is also known as the greater pelvis.

Posteriorly, the false pelvis is defined by the base of the sacrum and superior aspects of the sacral ala. Laterally, it is limited by the wings of the ilium. The anterior wall of the greater pelvis is incomplete and presents a wide space between the anterior borders of the wings of the ilium. This space is filled by the anterolateral abdominal wall muscles.

In the superior direction, the false pelvis connects with the abdominal cavity, while inferiorly it connects with the true pelvis via the pelvic inlet. Some authors consider the greater pelvis part of the abdominal cavity. Hence, the name false pelvis.

The greater pelvis has little obstetric relevance. It supports the lower abdominal viscera and contains the distal parts of the intestines.
