The depressor septi nasi is a small, paired facial muscle located on either side of the nasal septum, deep to the upper lip. In some individuals, it may be absent or rudimentary.

This muscle contributes to nasal movement and facial expression. As its name suggests, it pulls the nasal septum downward, which also lowers the nasal tip.

Origin: maxilla above the central incisor (incisive fossa) and/or the fibers of the orbicularis oris muscle.

Insertion: mobile portion of the nasal septum (columella) and medial crus of the major alar cartilage.

Action: depresses the nasal septum, lowering the nasal tip and contributing to nostril constriction.

Innervation: buccal branch of the facial nerve (CN VII).

Arterial blood supply: nasal septal branch of the superior labial artery (a branch of the facial artery).

Venous drainage: superior labial vein, which drains into the facial vein (a tributary of the internal jugular vein).
