The spinalis muscle is one of the muscles forming theerector spinae muscle - a muscle complex consisting of several smaller deep back muscles that all together form the intermediate layer of the deep back muscles. The other two groups are the longissimus muscles and iliocostalis muscles. The erector spinae muscles run along the length of the spine, and the spinalis is the most medial of the three erector spinae muscles.
