The erector spinae muscle is a muscle complex consisting of several smaller intrinsic muscle groups that all together form the intermediate layer of the deep muscles of the back. These muscles are classified as the long deep muscles of the back, meaning they stretch on either side of the spine across several vertebrae, not only one.
