The lateral plantar artery is one of the terminal branches of the posterior tibial artery. This artery runs distally to the base of the fifth metatarsal bone, turns medially, reaching the interval between the first and second metatarsal bases. Then the lateral plantar artery unites with the deep plantar branch of the dorsalis pedis artery, completing the deep plantar arch.
