The lateral rectus muscle is the abductor of the eyeball, and together with the medial rectus muscle, it moves the eyeball from side to side. Its anterior part is wider than the rest of the muscle. The lateral rectus is connected to the inferior oblique muscle by a frenulum of the intermuscular septum.
