The oral cavity contains six maxillary molars, and every side of the upper jaw has three maxillary molars. As mentioned in the previous slide, the main functions of these teeth include food crushing and grinding. 

The maxillary molars have large occlusal surfaces, which is also one of the characteristics of this teeth type. The occlusal surface usually contains five cusps. However, sometimes only three or four cusps can be present.

The first maxillary molars have the following numbers according to different dental notation systems:

• 3 and 14  (Universal Tooth Numbering System)
• 16 and 26 (ISO-3950 system)
• 6⏌and⎿6 (Palmer system)

The numbers of the second maxillary molars are as follows:

• 2 and 15 (Universal Tooth Numbering System)
• 17 and 27 (ISO-3950 system)
• 7⏌and⎿7 (Palmer system)

The numbers of the third maxillary molars are:

• 1 and 16 (Universal Tooth Numbering System)
• 18 and 28 (ISO-3950 system)
• 8⏌and⎿8 (Palmer system)
